Varicella (Chicken Pox) Vaccine

Who should receive this vaccine?

  • Children need 2 doses of varicella vaccine, usually: a primary dose at age 12 through 15 months followed by a secondary dose at age 4 through 6 years.

  • Older children, adolescents, and adults also need 2 doses of the varicella vaccine if they are not already immune to chickenpox.

Does this vaccine cause Chicken Pox?

No, the CDC has stated that the varicella vaccine does not cause chicken pox.

What else should I know?

Varicella vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines. Also, a child between 12 months and 12 years of age might receive the varicella vaccine together with MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine in a single shot, known as MMRV.
